Hunger Games is in theatres!!!

Like a faithful Hunger Games fanatic, I went to see Hunger Games in theatres this weekend! I did not go on Thursday night nor on Friday nor even on Saturday, but I was able to make it on Sunday afternoon/night. Parts were like I expected whereas others were interesting.

* Spoiler Alert * If you have not read Hunger Games and/or seen the movie, you may not way to continue reading as I will be revealing aspects of the movie/book.

I really wish at this point I could gush about the movie and how FABULOUS it was - unfortunately, that is not the case. When I first exit the theatre I am much more enthusiastically inclined and my opinion sometimes decreases the further I get away from seeing the movie. In this case, I liked the movie, but even right after viewing it, I had some reservations.

Let's talk about the scenes I really liked to begin with:

1. Allusion to the death of Seneca Crane - The book mentions that Seneca Crane was hung, but in the movie they have him walked into a locked room with a bowl full of Nightlock berries. Very ironic, and my favorite scene that was added in the movie!
2. Katniss is dressed in two  very distintic outfits before being placed in the Hunger Games. I went into the movie knowing it wouldn't be like what I envisioned and it wasn't, but I still really likedhow they did the outfit on the chariot and the interview dress. "Katniss, the girl on fire"
3. I really liked how they added in the perspective of the Capitol as we watched the movie. They kept going back to Caesar Flickerman as he is narrating the Hunger Games. It worked very well.
4. I also really liked how they included the gamemakers station within the movie. They would show the gamemakers were influencing the Hunger Games.
5. I really liked President Snow's part in the movie. I thought he was portrayed very well. Since he doesn't really play a part in the book, I like how he was added into the movie.

Reasons why I didn't fall in love with the movie version of The Hunger Games:

1. STOP! - The worst part that I really did not like was the end when they go to eat the berries instead of killing one another. Their hands are down by their belly button when they say stop. They drop the berries and then they yell Stop even louder. It was very poorly sequenced.
2. Peeta/Katniss - I don't think they played the Peeta/Katniss angle as well as they could have. It didn't seem to have much of an impact on the Capitol..
3. Haymitch and Seneca Crane - They had Haymitch speak to Seneca Crane to convince him to do the two people surviving from the same District. Haymitch would not have that much control.
4. Haymitch - I didn't like Haymitch in general. I did not think his character was portrayed very well, and I don't think the viewers got a true impression of who Haymitch really is as a character.
5. Gale - I did not like how Gale was portrayed. I like how we saw his reaction to Peeta and Katniss in the Hunger Games, but he wasn't portrayed as strong, loyal, wonderful as he is in the book.
6. Hand holding - In the movie, Katniss is persuaded by Peeta to hold his hand in the chariots and stay near each other. It feels forced instead of how it occurred in the book.
7.  Cato - I really did not like how they tried to humanize Cato at the end of the movie. His speech was unneccesary and made a bad impact on the movie for me.
8. Rue - I did not like her death scene. I was expecting a lot more.
9. Tracker Jackers - In my opinion, the tracker jackers would have created much more wild hallucinations. In the movie, they really just had her view distorted with an appearance of Caesar Flickerman.
10. Cinna - Cinna's character seemed a little forced and not as natural a connection with Katniss.
11. Parachutes - I did not like how they included notes with the parachutes from Haymitch. Wouldn't these notes have been caught on the Capitol cameras?
12. Training Sessions - I did not like how they organized the training sessions. I would have liked to see Rue flying through the trees. I especially thought the individual session with Katniss could have been much better.

I could actually keep going on and nitpicking with some of the details I didn't like, but I won't. The book was so amazing, in my opinion, that I should not have expected so much from the movie. Overall, I'm very glad I watched the movie and I would recommend watching it at least once. If I hadn't read the books, I think I would have liked it even more.

What are your thoughts on the movie and book?

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!

SPOILER ALERT: I am talking about a specific scene in the book - so if you have not read it yet, be warned this will reveal a part of the story!

1 DAY LEFT UNTIL THE RELEASE OF THE HUNGER GAMES!! REASON #1: Katniss sending arrow into the apple of the pig's mouth after being irritated by gamemakers!

This is one of my favorite parts in the book. By the time, Katniss shows up for her private session with the judges, they are tired and pretty much ignore her. She's shooting her arrows into difficult places with no response from the judges. Finally frustrated beyond belief, she sends an arrow straight into the apple of the roasted pig the gamemakers are feasting on. Then without waiting for a response she says "Thank you for your consideration" and walks out without being dismissed! I love this part! She stands up for herself and kicks butt, metaphorically! This is definitely one of my favorite parts in the book and something I am really looking forward to on the big screen.

The Hunger Games is released tomorrow night at midnight - otherwise you can catch it anytime this weekend! I haven't completely decided when, but I will definitely be going at some point! Happy Hunger Games!

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!

SPOILER ALERT: I am talking about a specific scene in the book - so if you have not read it yet, be warned this will reveal a part of the story!

2 DAYS LEFT UNTIL THE HUNGER GAMES COMES TO THE BIG SCREEN!! REASON 2: Katniss' tribute to Rue upon her death

This is such an important scene in the story. Rue's death means true heartache for Katniss. This is the only person Katniss allowed herself to become attached to in the Hunger Games, and after only a short alliance, she holds Rue as she dies. To show the Capitol that what they are doing is wrong and to honor Rue, Katniss envelopes Rue in flowers and arranges her peacefully to show her innocence. Not only is this a touching scene in the story, it also shows how smart Katniss is. She makes her honor of Rue such that the Capitol cannot prevent from showing the rest of Panem what Katniss has done. This was a very sad part of the book (in which I cried), but it is also very touching and symbolic.

Another scene which I am really looking forward to is Peeta camouflaging himself both in the training session and even more when he does it in the Games. I love art, but unfortunately I'm not artistic. So I love watching other people create what I can only marvel at! This brings Peeta up in my estimation, and it was the point in the book when I started to like him.

SPA NIGHT BEGINS TONIGHT AT 4:00 PM!

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!

3 DAYS LEFT BEFORE THE RELEASE OF THE HUNGER GAMES!! REASON 3: KATNISS EVERDEEN!!

Many people would assume that this would be the number one reason I am looking forward to seeing The Hunger Games, but it only makes reason number 3. Reason 1 and 2 are specific scenes I love in the book that I am looking forward to seeing in theaters. So if you have not read The Hunger Games - DO NOT READ THE NEXT TWO POSTS! I'm warning you right now, there will be certain events revealed.

Katniss is being played byJennifer Lawrence who also stared in Winter's Bone. From her acting in Winter's Bone, I have confidence that she will do an equally excellent job in The Hunger Games. Katniss is my favorite character in The Hunger Games. She is strong, self-reliant, loyal, tough, smart, rebellious, and soft-hearted! She may be a hunter, but she is definitely not a killer. I can't wait to see her progress through The Hunger Games!

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!

4 days left until The Hunger Games movie release! Reason 4: Rue

The tribute from district 11 is the youngest, smallest participant in the 74th Hunger Games. She makes an initial impression on Katniss because Rue reminds her of her sister, Primrose. Rue is played by Amandla Stenberg in the movie. I am looking forward to seeing her in the movie. She is a very sweet character. She adds some humanity and perspective to The Hunger Games. Plus although she is small, she still scores a high number in training so don't count her out!

Spa Night - Because You Deserve It!!

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!

5 DAYS UNTIL THE RELEASE OF THE HUNGER GAMES IN THEATERS! REASON 5: Peeta Mellark

Peeta is played by Josh Hutcherson in The Hunger Games! I must admit I was not originally captivated by Peeta. He seemed so much weaker than Katniss. Plus when you have Gale as competition...! Through the course of the series, Peeta really started to grow on me. Peeta is a very honest person who stays true to himself. One of my favorite quotes from the book comes from Peeta, "I want to die as myself... I don't want them to change me in there. Turn me into some kind of monster that I'm not."

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!

6 DAYS LEFT OF WAITING FOR THE HUNGER GAMES! Reason 6: Gale Hawthorne

I'll be honest - Gale was at the top of my list of favorite characters the first time I read The Hunger Games. What is there not to love: self-sufficient, loyal, tall, dark hair, attractive, supportive, brooding, somewhat mysterious - shall I go on? lol! They chose Liam Hemsworth to portray Gale in The Hunger Games movie! If you can't tell which one is Gale from the picture - then there's no help for you (just find the most attractive one:) )! I can't wait to see him in action: hunting in the beginning, pulling Primrose off of Katniss, and talking to Katniss before she is sent to the Capitol. He does not have a main role in the first book, but he is constantly in Katniss mind and sometimes affects the actions he takes. Plus, I'll be honest - he's not too bad to look at :)!

Participants will also be able to make their own lotions and bath salts! This program is designed to give teens a break from their hectic lives. Come in anytime from 4 until 6 to enjoy spa night!

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!

7 DAYS LEFT UNTIL....THE HUNGER GAMES!!! Reason 7: Cinna!

Cinna is one of the more intriguing characters in The Hunger Games. He is from the Capitol and should be just like all the Capitol people - instead the readers make a real connection with Cinna! Surprisingly he chose District 12 to work with which is unusual to begin with. Secondly, he seems to make a real connection with Katniss and truly care for her. His work does not end with just being her stylist - he also becomes her friend! I also am really looking forward to his creations for Katniss - they are amazing in the book and I'm very excited to see how they are portrayed in the movie. Lenny Kravitz was chosen to play Cinna in the theatrical version.

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!

8 DAYS LEFT UNTIL THE THEATRICAL RELEASE OF THE HUNGER GAMES! Reason 8: Haymitch Abernathy

This was one of my favorite characters in the book. He's seems like such a straight-forward character, but he has a lot of depth to him. I never quite knew exactly what he was thinking. He adds some great comical relief to some moments during The Hunger Games. They chose Woody Harrelson to play Haymitch in the movie. I can't wait to see his interpretation of Haymitch and his incorporation in the movie!

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!

9 days left until THE HUNGER GAMES release! Reason 9: Effie Trinket!!

I can't wait to meet Effie Trinket in the movie premiere of The Hunger Games. She is definitely an original. She is the District 12 escort which means she escorts Peeta and Katniss from District 12 to the Capitol. In the book, she has such an energetic spirit and seems like such a quirky character. They have chosen Elizabeth Banks to portray Effie in the movie. I can't wait to see the outfits she'll wear, the things she'll say, and the things she'll do!! “Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor!”

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!

10 DAYS UNTIL THE MOVIE PREMIERE OF THE HUNGER GAMES!!! Reason 10 to look forward to The Hunger Games: Survival/Arena

This is such a central aspect to the book. The majority of the book takes place in this arena. I can't wait to see how they portray the contestants' entrance into the arena, the cornucopia, the layout of the arena, and ultimately Katniss' struggle to survive. There are so many exciting moments in the arena for Katniss. I can't wait to see how these moments are portrayed. I don't want to give anything away but there are four main events that I am really looking forward to seeing that take place in the arena!

Book Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Juliette hasn't touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal. As long as she doesn't hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don't fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war-- and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she's exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

In this electrifying debut, Tahereh Mafi presents a world as riveting as The Hunger Games and a superhero story as thrilling as The X-Men. Full of pulse-pounding romance, intoxicating villainy, and high-stakes choices, Shatter Me is a fresh and original dystopian novel—with a paranormal twist—that will leave readers anxiously awaiting its sequel.

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!

11 days left until the theatre release of The Hunger Games!! 11th reason to look forward to The Hunger Games: Primrose Everdeen

Primrose does not necessarily have a leading role in the movie, but she is a leading influence on Katniss' actions. Primrose is the one pure thing in Katniss' life - she will do anything to protect her. They chose Willow Shields to play the role of Primrose in The Hunger Games movie. I think they made a wonderful choice, and I am excited to see how she does in the short time she's shown on screen. She is the exact opposite of Katniss and I am really excited to see the connection between Katniss and Primrose. Another aspect related I am looking forward to is seeing their mother. Katniss has very conflicting feelings towards her mother. This is one more aspect to look forward to in the movie!

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!

12 more days until the release of The Hunger Games!!! 12th Reason to Look forward to The Hunger Games: Weird fashions in Panem!

Effie Trinket is the poster of the weird fashions expected to be seen in Panem. They have some very weird styles that I can't wait to see. This might be the girl in me really looking forward to seeing the different styles! The pictures of Effie already make me excited to see the other concoctions they come up with!

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!

13 more days until the release of the long-awaited movie, The Hunger Games!! Reason 13: the FIGHT against a totalitarianism society - the FIGHT against dictatorship!

I'll admit another aspect of myself - I love a good fight! To be more specific, I love an individual ready and willing to fight against injustice! Part of the reason I love The Hunger Games is that Katniss is that individual and not only that she's not fully conscious of what she's doing. She is mainly focusing on staying true to herself. She has no alterior motive, but in the process she finds herself fighting against the injustice inherent in the society she lives in.

I'm really looking forward to how the movie is going to portray these injustices and the fight which Katniss undergoes starting with the Mockingjay pin and ending with her last defiant act. I hope they find a way to portray it as part of Katniss' character and not a well organized effort.

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!!

14 more days until the release of The Hunger Games!!! Reason 14: Love triangle between Katniss, Gale and Peeta - Who would you choose?

Katniss is such an awesome character. She is such a strong, resourceful woman so it makes sense that others would be drawn to her. The first book really had me torn - I had fallen in love with Gale - who wouldn't? Strong friend and supporter, provider for his family, and a loyal friend. Plus from the description in the book, not too bad on the eyes either. Then we have the introduction of Peeta. I'll be honest - he seemed weaker and less demanding of my attention. To be honest, I was rooting for Gale throughout the entire first book. I can't wait to see how this is portrayed in the movie!

Thursday, March 8, 2012

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!!

15 more days until the movie release!!! Reason 15: Symbolism of Mockingjay pin

I loved this portion of the book. I loved how they took a symbol that was originally the Capitol's creation and turned it against them in the revolution. I am a huge fan of symbolism, one of the reason why I love poetry so much!, so I was really excited when Madge gave Katniss the Mockingjay pin. I hope they show this pin throughout the movie especially when they are in the arena!

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!

16 more days! Reason 16 - Panem Capitol and President Snow

I am really looking forward to how President Snow and the Capitol will be presented in The Hunger Games. Suzanne Collins does an excellent job of depicting the Capitol and President Snow, who is such a central character to these books even though he doesn't make a huge appearance. I was very surprised they chose Donald Sutherland to represent President Snow in the movie.

From the books, I have an impression of President Snow as conniving, intelligent, manipulating and evil. Donald Sutherland is more of a friendly grandpa over the adjectives I depicted. I'm intreged to see how he portrays President Snow in the movie. This is one area that I am not as excited as nervous and intrigued!

Countdown to THE HUNGER GAMES!!!!

I am very excited for the release of The Hunger Games movie on March 23rd! Normally, I don't get excited for movies that were originally books. Being the librarian and book-lover that I am, I never really enjoy the movies as much as the books. I am hoping The Hunger Games will be different given the trailers and information I have already heard - I am very excited!

To celebrate this excitement - I will be having a countdown to the release of The Hunger Games which you can be assured I will be attending! Each day I will post one thing I am really looking forward to in The Hunger Games leading up to its theatre release starting today.

Reason 17: The books were awesome!

I was first introduced to these books by a coworker who described it as a book about teenagers killing teenagers. You can imagine my excitement - there was no excitement! I was very leery about reading the book, but trusting her judgment, I checked out the book, started the first page and was hooked!

I finished the first book very quickly....AND THEN...had to wait until the second book was released :( Subsequently, I read through the series very quickly. The Hunger Games is definitely one of my favorite recent series!

Here is a link to the official movie trailer - unfortunately, they won't let me post it here :(

Book Review: iBoy by Kevin Brooks

Search. Shock. Destroy.

Before the attack, Tom Harvey was just an average teenager. But a head-on collision with high technology has turned him into an actualized App. Fragments of a shattered iPhone are embedded in his brain. And they're having an extraordinary effect on his every thought. Because now Tom knows, sees, and can do more than any normal boy ever could.

But with his new powers comes a choice: To avenge Lucy, the girl he loves, will he hunt down the vicious gangsters who hurt her? Will he take the law into his own electric hands and exterminate them from the South London housing projects where, by fear and violence, they rule? Not even his mental search engine can predict the shocking outcome of iBoy's actions.
