Movie Review: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

This is another bad review of a movie hailed as "funny and clever" by Dan Jewel of Life & Style. I just did not get it. I had to keep myself from falling asleep not even halfway through it. The premise of the movie was good. Life on Earth's going to end and how will you react? It follows many people as they prepare for the end of the world and enjoy the time before it occurs. This movie just falls far from where I thought it would go. Dan in Real Life had a somewhat similar start feel to it with the dry humor and depressing atmosphere, but that is where the similarities end. Dan in Real Life was phenomenal! And I've watched it multiple times. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World was horrible. I didn't even finish which could definitely change my review. I got an hour into the movie and stopped it. Steve Carrell also has such wonderful movies, but this is one I would recommend not checking out. Let me know what you thought!

Set in a too-near future, two neighbors, Dodge and Penny react in their own unique ways to the announcement that a 70-mile-wide asteroid is en route to the Earth. he wants to return to his first love. She just wants to get back to her family. As the unlikely companions' respective journeys converge, their outlooks -- if not the world's -- brighten in surprising and hilarious ways.

Movie Review: Brave

Just watched Brave last night. I was very surprised by the movie. Mostly because the previews give very little idea of what the movie is actually about. I enjoyed watching Brave. It's a fun, family movie. It's not one I'm going to rave about, but I did enjoy it, and I would recommend watching it at least once at some point.

Movie Review: The Amazing Spider-Man

In one word: Sublime! And for those who might need it, sublime means "not to be excelled; supreme, inspiring awe; impressive." I have watched the Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst Spidermans. Whereas I passively enjoyed those movies, I absolutely loved the new spiderman movie. It was funny, action-packed and adventurous. From the moment the movie started to the moment it ended, I was hooked!! As the title suggests, this movie was amazing! Andrew Garfield is PERFECT as Spider-Man and I love Emma Stone as the love interest. I also loved how much closer this movie stuck to the original comics. This one will be purchased and put into my own collection!

Book Review: Origin by Jessica Khoury

This book was such an original idea. As the phrase on the front reads, "The jungle hides a girl who cannot die." From that phrase on, I was hooked. This girl has grown up in a gilded cage believing life to be perfect and meaningful, only to find a loose string in her once perfect life and after tugging, her life begins to unravel. I loved the characters and the intrigue within the book. It has quite an interesting ending! (in a good way)

Pia has grown up in a secret laboratory hidden deep in the Amazon rain forest. She was raised by a team of scientists who have created her to be the start of a new immortal race. But on the night of her seventeenth birthday, Pia discovers a hole in the electric fence that surrounds her sterile home--and sneaks outside the compound for the first time in her life.

Free in the jungle, Pia meets Eio, a boy from a nearby village. Together, they embark on a race against time to discover the truth about Pia's origin--a truth with deadly consequences that will change their lives forever.

Origin is a beautifully told, shocking new way to look at an age-old desire: to live forever, no matter the cost.

Movie Review: Prometheus

This is another movie review that is not an entirely glowing recommendation. It is also another movie review with Charlize Theron in it. This movie started off a little confusing. It needs your full attention because a lot is going on. As the movie develops, it captured my attention and I was hooked. Unfortunately, I was also tired. So I paused the movie and went to bed. I restarted the movie the next day with high expectations because the previous half was very good! ...Unfortunately, the movie got weird and confusing. Parts weren't explained well and I finished the movie frustrated and confused. I later found out that this movie is a preface to the Alien series, but it still doesn't explain a lot of what occured. The writers, director and producer definitely dropped the ball after the second half of the movie, but let me know what you thought. I could definitely have missed something.

A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Movie Review: Snow White and the Huntsman

I will apologize ahead of time. For the next week or so, you will see a lot of movie reviews. With the holidays and other events occuring in my life I have not been able to read a lot of books. Instead I have watched a lot of new release DVDs. Another quick fact about me: I do not like movie theaters. I would rather wait the extra amount of months to a year to watch a movie than see it in a movie theater. I love the comfort of my home, and I hate how dirty and uncomfortable movie theaters are!! So here goes my review of Snow White and the Huntsman:

I am so glad I did NOT go see this movie in theaters! Let me preface this by saying that I am not a fan of Kristen Stewart, and when I say not a fan, I mean it is really hard for me to watch her and take her seriously as an actress. Have you ever had an actor or actress that you just couldn't stand watching...then you understand. This movie review is definitely biased as a result.

I was not a huge fan of Snow White and the Huntsman. I liked the idea for the movie with the focus being on the huntsman and the evil stepmother. It was a unique take on the well-known story. Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron did such an excellent job in this movie. Theron was beautiful as the witch and perfectly cast. The mirror was excellent; I loved that portrayl! I just wish they had cast someone different as Snow White. Overall, I'm glad I watched it, but I probably wouldn't watch again thanks to the casting of Kristen Stewart.

In a twist to the fairy tale, the Huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods to be killed winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving! I am very thankful for my family, fiance and current health this Thanksgiving! What are you thankful for?

A Thanksgiving is never complete unless I watch some of the Macy's Day Parade. It has long been my goal to watch more than 30 minutes of this parade, but unfortunately, making dinner and visiting relatives has always conflicted with this! Here goes attempt #25!

The 86th annual Macy's Day Parade is broadcast on NBC starting at 9:00 AM until NOON! If you watch it, make sure to post which is your favorite float! Personally, I love the Care Bears and the singing.

I love (and I mean LOVE) the Macy's Day Parade. It is one of my favorite things about Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, I have never been able to watch from start to finish, but this year is going to be the year! ...maybe :)

The fun starts tomorrow on NBC at 9:00 AM. What is your favorite float?

Movie Review: Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted

I loved this movie. I know a lot of people thought it wasn't that good, but I really enjoyed it. I liked the new characters and the new villian. It was entertaining, colorful, fun and musical! Another great aspect: you don't have to watch it with your full attention. One of the reasons I love cartoons. Generally, there isn't a huge twist at the ending which you won't understand if you didn't pay attention. Don't get me wrong, I love those movies too, but it was nice to relax and not pay full attention. My favorite character by far is Marty and he has an important/fun role, in my opinion, in this movie. I rewatched several scenes because they are that fun! Check it out today!

Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman are still fighting to get home to their beloved Big Apple. Their journey takes them through Europe where they find the perfect cover: a traveling circus, which they reinvent - Madagascar style.

Madagascar 3 continued!

Here is an additional video from Madagascar 3! This movie was so cute and these are some of my favorite parts. It doesn't go fully into any specific part, but it gives you a preview.

Movie Review: Katy Perry the movie: Part of Me

I love Katy Perry's music and I love Katy Perry. I love her creativity and her enthusiasm. I'm not much for keeping up with celebrity news so this movie gave me an insight into her life while she was on tour. It was entertaining, informative and heartwarming. Any Katy Perry fan should check this movie out!

Book Review: Bewitching by Alex Flinn

This book was really well-written. This isn't the best way to start out a book review, but I did enjoy reading it. Was it one of my favorite books? No. BUT, I did stay up to finish reading it one night. It's not one of those books that I will read again and again, but it is one that I am glad I read it. This book incorporates retellings of some fairy tales which I love.

Bewitching can be a beast. . . .

Once, I put a curse on a beastly and arrogant high school boy. That one turned out all right. Others didn't.

I go to a new school now--one where no one knows that I should have graduated long ago. I'm not still here because I'm stupid; I just don't age.

You see, I'm immortal. And I pretty much know everything after hundreds of years--except for when to take my powers and butt out.

I want to help, but things just go awry in ways I could never predict. Like when I tried to free some children from a gingerbread house and ended up being hanged. After I came back from the dead (immortal, remember?), I tried to play matchmaker for a French prince and ended up banished from France forever. And that little mermaid I found in the "Titanic" lifeboat? I don't even want to think about it.

Now a girl named Emma needs me. I probably shouldn't get involved, but her gorgeous stepsister is conniving to the core. I think I have just the thing to fix that girl--and it isn't an enchanted pumpkin. Although you never know what will happen when I start . . . bewitching.

Movie Review: The Cabin in the Woods

Surprise Thriller! This is not your average horror movie. I would actually give this move a 7 out of 10. Minus points for the ending and some other minor things. Overall, this movie was very surprising. I was expecting the normal blood and guts, don't worry that's still in the movie, but there is also humor and drama and adventure. It's a weird combination but for this movie, it really works!

Five college friends go for a break at a remote cabin in the woods, where they get more than they bargained for. Together, they must discover the truth behind the cabin in the woods.

Book Review: From What I Remember by Stacy Kramer & Valerie Thomas

This book was excellent! It was a crazy, wild adventure that was fun to start. While it's not completely believable, one misguided, not-thought-out decision could lead to this crazy adventure. The characters are lovable, and you end up cheering for Kylie throughout, as well as understanding, if not liking, the rest of the characters as well. I'll let the summary speak for itself!

Warning: This book would be considered PG-13, for sure. There are references to drugs and alcohol use by underage students. It is definitely intended for a mature audience.

Kylie: MEXICO? What a nightmare! I should be putting the finishing touches on my valedictorian speech. Graduation is TODAY! Wait! Is this a wedding band on my finger??

Max: It started with Kylie's laptop and a truck full of stolen electronics, and it ended in Ensenada. It was hot, the way she broke us out like some chick in an action movie. But now we're stranded here, with less than twenty-four hours before graduation.

Will: Saving Kylie Flores from herself is kind of a full-time occupation. Luckily, I, Will Bixby, was born for the job. And when I found out she was stuck in Mexico with dreamy Max Langston, sure, I agreed to bring their passports across the border. But there's no reason to rush back home right away -- this party is just getting started!

Lily: This CANNOT be happening. It's like some cruel joke. Or a bad dream. I close my eyes, and when I reopen them, they're still there. Max and Kylie Flores, freak of the century. In bed together. If Kylie thinks I'm giving him up without a fight, she's dead wrong.

Hilarious and poignant, FROM WHAT I REMEMBER blends high-octane adventure, romance and coming of age. No one is exactly who they seem here and by the end of their road trip together, they will all be changed in ways they never could have imagined.

FROM WHAT I REMEMBER was recently nominated for a YALSA Reader's Choice Award. Film rights bought by Paramount Pictures.

Book Review: The Rise of Nine by Pittacus Lore

This book was amazing! I have enjoyed all of the books by Pittacus Lore so far. I was hoping this would be the conclusion to the series, but there will be another one released next year. I can't wait to read that one. This entire book focuses on the different Garde members separated around the world, their experiences, and how they try to reconnect with one another. They also continue to develop their legacies and figure out how to use their inheritances. It's quite an adventure as they get that much closer to fighting Setrakus Ra!

Until the day I met John Smith, Number Four, I'd been on the run alone, hiding and fighting to stay alive.

Together, we are much more powerful. But it could only last so long before we had to separate to find the others. . . .
I went to Spain to find Seven, and I found even more, including a tenth member of the Garde who escaped from Lorien alive. Ella is younger than the rest of us, but just as brave. Now we're looking for the others—including John.
But so are they.
They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England.
And Number Three in Kenya.
They caught me in New York—but I escaped.

I am Number Six.
They want to finish what they started.
But they'll have to fight us first.

This year the teen department and teens of Manitowoc Public Library have decided to decorate a tree for Tannenbaum. Tannenbaum is an all day charitable event with beautifully decorated holiday trees and wreathes, silent auction, door prizes, and raffles. Local businesses and groups decorate a tree whihc is then auctioned off.
