Happy Leap Day!

Leap Year occurs about every 4 years making the year 366 days long instead of 365. With each leap day comes some traditions:

St Oswald’s Day

Leap Day is also St Oswald’s Day, named after an archbishop of York who died on February 29, 992. The memorial is celebrated on February 29 during Leap Years and on February 28 during common years.

Bad luck

In Scotland, it used to be considered unlucky for someone to be born on Leap Day, just like Friday 13th is considered an unlucky day by many. In Greece it’s said to be unlucky for couples to marry during a Leap Year, and especially on Leap Day.

Women propose to their men

According to an old Irish legend, or possibly history, St Bridget struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men – and not just the other way around – every 4 years. This is believed to have been introduced to balance the traditional roles of men and women in a similar way to how Leap Day balances the calendar.

In some places, Leap Day has been known as “Bachelors’ Day” for the same reason. A man was expected to pay a penalty, such as a gown or money, if he refused a marriage proposal from a woman on Leap Day. In many European countries, especially in the upper classes of society, tradition dictates that any man who refuses a woman's proposal on February 29 has to buy her 12 pairs of gloves. The intention is that the woman can wear the gloves to hide the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring. During the middle ages there were laws governing this tradition.

This reminds me of one of my favorite movies: LEAP YEAR! I have watched this movie multiple times - if you haven't yet or even if you have - check it out to rewatch it! Amy Adams and Matthew Goode do an excellent job in this movie - I love Matthew Goode's accent!! I'll admit I'm a sucker for accents!
Do you have any traditions on leap day?

Book Review - Girl Meets Boy

This is a phenomenal new book by a collection of teen's favorite authors. Some of the authors include Chris Crutcher, James Howe, Sara Ryan, and Rita Williams-Garcia. They have teamed up together to create a book about events told from two different perspectives: the boy's perspective and the girl's perspective!

It's an interesting look at how women view the same situation differently from men and vice versa. One author writes the first perspective and the other author writes the second perspective!

What do guys and girls REALLY think?

Twelve of the most dynamic and engaging teen authors writing today team up for this one-of-a-kind collection of he said/she said stories - he tells it from the guy's point of view, she tells it from the girl's. Stories of love and heartbreak, like the good-looking jock who falls for a dangerous girl and the flipside of the toxic girl who never learns to be loved; a basketball star and the artistic (and shorter) boy she never knew she wanted; and a gay boy looking for love online and the girl who could help make it happen, teach us that relationships become complicated because there are two sides to every story!

Here's hoping for spring!

I'm hoping I don't jinxed anything, but I am really hoping for spring and warmer weather. I love winter - I love snow and sweaters and hot chocolate and sledding and skiing, etc. BUT we haven't had any snow - so I say - BRING ON SPRING!

In honor of what might be my false hope, the fish have decided to celebrate with me and change into more springish colors! I can't wait for warmer weather and all that that entails :) Here's hoping!!!

Justin Timberlake - Movies

His new movie, In Time, was just released on DVD on January 31st. I actually went to see this movie in theatres. It was surprisingly good! Here is the synopis: In the not-too-distant future the aging gene has been switched off. To avoid overpopulation, time has become the currency and the way people pay for luxuries and necessities. The rich can live forever, while the rest try to negotiate for their immortality. A poor young man who comes into a fortune of time, ends up on the run from a police force known as 'time keepers'.

I would definitely recommend getting on this hold's list to check it out!

Other Justin Timberlake movies I would recommend:
- The Social Network: awesome - loved this movie

- Yogi Bear - Timberlake plays Boo-Boo Bear, my favorite character!

- Friends with Benefits - might be inappropriate for anyone under 13 years of age - I thought it was a good love story

- Shrek Forever After - both in the third movie and last Shrek movie, Timberlake played Artie Pendragon.

Justin Timberlake started as a boy band member and is now focusing on his film career. I must say, I do rather enjoy watching him on screen. And these movies in particular, are some of his best! Check 'em out!

Book Review: Incarnate by Jodi Meadows

I have been waiting for this book for a long time! I can't wait to read it - The plot reminds me of the movie, Aeon Flux, which I absolutely loved. I can't wait to read this book!

Ana is new. For thousands of years in Range, a million souls have been reincarnated over and over, keeping their memories and experiences from previous lifetimes. When Ana was born, another soul vanished, and no one knows why.
Even Ana's own mother thinks she's a nosoul, an omen of worse things to come, and has kept her away from society. To escape her seclusion and learn whether she'll be reincarnated, Ana travels to the city of Heart, but its citizens are suspicious and afraid of what her presence means. When dragons and sylph attack the city, is Ana to blame?
Sam believes Ana's new soul is good and worthwhile. When he stands up for her, their relationship blooms. But can he love someone who may live only once, and will Ana's enemies--human and creature alike--let them be together? Ana needs to uncover the mistake that gave her someone else's life, but will her quest threaten the peace of Heart and destroy the promise of reincarnation for all?

Movie Release - The Vow

Here is a movie I have been looking forward to for a couple of months!! I first ran across this story when a teen let me know about it - thank you!

It's such a beautiful concept - girl and boy fall in love, marry, and intend to live happily ever after. Unfortunaely, the wife gets in a car accident and loses her memory. Instead of giving up on her and their marriage, her husband decides to woo her again and make her fall back in love with him!!! The best part - this is a true story about
Kim and Krickitt Carpenter!!

This movie will be released this Friday, February 10th starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum. It sounds like a beautiful movie - I can't wait to see it!! There is also a book being released as well!

Another movie I can't wait for... THE HUNGER GAMES IN THEATERS, MARCH 23rd!!!!!

Book Review: A Beautiful Dark by Jocelyn Davies

I can't tell you how many times I checked this book out and returned it because I didn't get a chance to read it! Not because I wasn't interested, but because I never got around to it. I did loan it to my sister who read it and promptly woke me up in the middle of the night...very rudely as only sisters can... to yell at me!!! The book was SO GOOD that she was angry she had to wait for the second book in the series!

I started this book yesterday and almost completely finished as of 12:00 PM today! The book is phenomenal - I kept devouring each page trying to find out more and quickly. I can't wait for the second book to be released!

My recommendation?! READ IT...READ IT...READ IT!!!

On the night of Skye’s seventeenth birthday, she meets two enigmatic strangers. Complete opposites—like fire and ice—Asher is dark and wild, while Devin is fair and aloof. Their sudden appearance sends Skye’s life into a tailspin. She has no idea what they want, or why they seem to follow her every move—only that their presence coincides with a flurry of strange events. Soon she begins to doubt not just the identity of the two boys, but also the truth about her own past.

In the dead of a bitingly cold Colorado winter, Skye finds herself coming to terms with the impossible secret that threatens to shatter her world. Torn between Asher, who she can’t help falling for, and Devin, who she can’t stay away from, the consequences of Skye’s choice will reach further than the three of them could ever imagine.
