Beads for Life!!

Women in Uganda are now able to afford food and housing for their families thanks to the support of Beads for Life. This organization sells the beautiful beads, necklaces, bracelets and products created by women in Uganda to interested customers around the globe.

On Tuesday, July 5th, we will be learning more about the women in Uganda as well as learning how to roll one of the beads! There will also be enough Ugandan loose beads available to make bracelets - one per teen!

Don't forget to bring your friends and family to the Beads for Life booth at Krazy Daze on Saturday, July 9th! 100% of the proceeds are going back to support the women in Uganda and help realize their dreams - Continue reading to learn about one of the women benefited from this organization.

Meet Nakimera Brenda:

Brenda, 22, is achieving her goal of becoming a nurse despite the huge challenges of her early life. Brenda’s father was insane and wandered from village to village. Her mother, unable to cope with her family and extreme poverty, abandoned them.

Brenda was taken in by a distant relative of her father who told her, “I can’t afford anything for you, but you can stay with us.” But Brenda was determined to get herself educated. By studying really hard, late into the night by candlelight, she managed to win scholarships to high school, scoring at the highest levels of achievement.

But upon graduation there were no jobs to be found for a poor girl with a high school education. So Brenda resigned herself to no expectations and was waiting without hope at home. Now Brenda is a part of our Vocational Training Program for youth. She passed her nursing entrance exams and is enrolled as a first-year student at Mulago Nursing School. She will be a much needed and wonderful nurse.

Featured book: The Cardturner by Louis Sachar

Louis Sachar is famous for books such as Holes and The Wayside School stories. This book incorporates his continuously hilarious and amazing talent. Alton, the main character, explains some of the features of bridge throughout the book, BUT to make sure no one gets bored, he precedes each description with a picture of a whale. Alton was forced to read Moby Dick in school, so he understands the need to skip the boring parts - If you see the whale, feel free to skip that part!

Alton Richards is resigned to spending a slow summer on his own after his girlfriend leaves him for his best friend and he finds himself with no money and no job. Unfortunately, his mother insists that he become his blind great-uncle's chauffeur and cardturner at local bridge tournaments. Though the 17-year-old has only met Lester Trapp on a few occasions, his mother hopes that this connection will inspire the wealthy old man to write the family into his will. Alton reluctantly agrees, even though he knows nothing about bridge and has no interest in learning the game. He meets Toni Castaneda at the tournaments and soon discovers that he's not the only long-lost relative intent on winning over Trapp and his inheritance. What transpires is an intriguing glimpse into a crazy family full of secrets and unusual quirks.

3 Nuclear Power Plants threatened in U.S.

There are three different nuclear power plants threatened by natural causes this week. Two in Nebraska from flooding and one in New Mexico from wildfire.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico will be closed for a second day today as a raging wildfire remains a threat, while floodwaters from the Missouri River are keeping two nuclear power plants under siege in Nebraska.

The authorities are adamant that all precautions have been taken and all three plants are expected to survive the flooding/wildfire and pose no immediate threat at this time.

Featured Book - Mirror, Mirror by Marilyn Singer

This is probably the one and only children's book I will every put on the blog - I promise! I took this home last night and read it all the way through. I had heard about it from another librarian. It is a book of reverso poems. On each page are two poems. The second poem is the first poem written backwards! Each poem is a different perspective of the same situation.

My favorite poem is about Little Red Riding Hood from the wolf's perspective and from Red Riding Hood's perspective. Definitely take the time to read these poems!

The Hangover Part II - Controversy!

If you haven't seen The Hangover Part II in theaters, now might be a good time to go see it. The tattoo on Ed Helm's face, which is a prominent part of the new movie, might be digitally switched out with a different tatoo. The tattoo artist responsible for Mike Tyson's tatoo on the left is suing Warner Bros. for stealing his artistic creation. Crazy!

For more information, read the full article on Entertainment News Online.

Featured Book - Tiger's Curse by Colleen Houck

Phenomenal! This book was amazing - it had the Indiana Jones adventure along with mystery and drama. I can honestly say this is the best book I have read this entire year (so far:)) It looks a little intimidating at first since it's a bigger book, but once I started, I couldn't put it down ~ which means I have homework to catch up on! The second book, Tiger's Quest, has been released with the third book, Tiger's Voyage, to be released in November. Sadly, I am 7th in line for Tiger's Quest, but Manitowoc hopefully will be purchasing another copy. If you read any book this summer, make it this one!

Passion. Fate. Loyalty.
Would you risk it all to change your destiny?
The last thing Kelsey Hayes thought she'd be doing this summer was trying to break a 300-year old Indian curse. With a mysterious white tiger named Ren. Halfway around the world.
But that's exactly what happened.
Face-to-face with dark forces, spellbinding magic, and mystical worlds where nothing is what it seems, Kelsey risks everything to piece together an ancient prophecy that could break the curse forever.

This book is also a Battle of the Books selection. Sign up for Battle of the Books at the Reference Desk. Competition is on September 7th!

Movie ~ I am Number Four!

Don't tell anyone, but I watched the movie last night BEFORE I read the book...oops! I do have the book on hold, but the movie came in first. Don't judge me too harshly - I don't often do this:)

I was a little hesitant to watch this movie since I have heard bad reviews in regards to this movie. Contrary to those reviews, I really liked the movie! It was funny, compelling, and with good acting. I hope they make a sequel to the movie. I'm looking forward to reading the novel to see what is added to the story!

John is an extraordinary teen, masking his true identity and passing as a typical high school student to elude a deadly enemy seeking to destroy him. Three like him have already been killed ... he is Number Four.
