Good Reads - Incarceron

Title: Incarceron
Author: Catherine Fisher

The Incarceron is a vast prison that is self-aware and intelligent. Created to help build a utopian society outside of its walls, only one person has ever managed to escape from its walls. 17-year-old Finn awakens within the prison with no memory of how he got there. He must fight his way to stay alive and is determined to escape - no matter how impossible it may be. Meanwhile, Claudia is prison in her own right - stuck living by society's rules and facing an impending marriage that her father, the warden of the Incarceron, is anxious to make happen.

By chance, Finn and Claudia both find crystal keys that allow them to communicate, making it clear that if they are going to find freedom, they will need each other.

Catherine Fisher does a great job in creating multiple worlds in Incarceron - one inside and one outside the prison walls. She also delves into the society that would create such a structure and creates a fascinating world that is hard to step away from. At 400 pages, it is daunting to start, but once the fantasy story takes hold, it will make for a fast read!

Be sure to keep an eye out for the sequel, Sapphique, due for release on December 28!

Battle Champs...Again!

Congratulations to the Chilton Public Library for their triumph in the the 2010 Battle of the Books competition. That makes for back-to-back titles and dynasty in the making.
The champs for the 2nd straight time

Chilton claimed the win over Brillion and Kiel by a mere 2 points - 26 to 24 - after accumulating the most points in the preliminary rounds.

Brillion finished a mere 2 points behind the winners

Kiel made a strong push to dethrone the champs

The fight to the final round was tight as well. Kiel edged out Manitowoc by a single point to compete for the win. Manitowoc (calling themselves the "Azul Ninjas") made a strong push but came up just short.

Manitowoc's Azul Ninjas fell just short

Two Rivers and New Holstein joined forces for the second year in row. After some early bumps, they made things competitive with a solid second-round performance.

The Two Rivers/New Holstein amalgam gave a late charge

Congratulations to all Battlers for a great competition and some impressive recall on obscure facts from all of the books! We are already looking forward to 2011 to see if anyone can knock off the Chilton juggernaut...
