Bucks Reading Challenge

The Milwaukee Bucks Reading Challenge is underway again and everyone in grades 3-10 can take part. Anyone who participates can earn a voucher for a ticket to a Bucks game, plus chances to earn other cool prizes, like an autographed basketball, court side seats, and on-court recognition for your reading skills.

All you need to do is read. That's it! Keep track of the number of pages you read in magazines and newspapers (up to 100 pages combined) and in books (unlimited) until you read at lead 500 pages. That will earn you voucher for either the May 13 game vs. New Orleans or the May 21 game vs. Portland. If you keep reading beyond 750 pages, you can earn Overtime status and have your name entered into drawings for the addition prizes.

To take part, stop by the Reference Desk or the Youth Department to register and get your scoring sheets. The contest goes until February 23, when you must report the number of pages you read to us at the library.

It is a fun and easy way to earn tickets to a Bucks game!

Discuss the book - The Princess Bride

Every month, the library hosts a book discussion on a different book and next month, we have one that should appeal to you: The Princess Bride by William Goldman. This is the same book that was turned into a movie of the same name with Cary Elwes, Robin Wright Penn, Billy Crystal and Andre the Giant. All you need to do is read the book and come to the library on February 19 at 6 p.m. to talk about what you liked or didn't like about it.

There are copies of The Princess Bride available for checkout at the Reference Desk as well as questions that apply to the story. The discussions last about 90 minutes and drinks and snacks are served.

Hope to see YA there for the discussion!

Good Reads: The Graveyard Book

Title: The Graveyard Book
Author: Neil Gaiman

When his family is murdered by the mysterious man named Jack, Nobody 'Bod' Owens is raised by the spirits who take their eternal rest at a nearby graveyard. Growing up within the gates of the graveyard, Bod is safe from the dangerous Jack as he learns from all the different ghosts who live their. Once he is outside the gates, however, he is mortal peril - yet how can he grow up without venturing out into the world? Ultimately, Bod finds himself face-to-face with Jack and the consequences of his actions will change him forever.

Gaiman, the author of Coraline and The Sandman comic books, tells a great story about growing up and the choices and changes that go along with it. Gaiman's descriptions and imagery are spectacular and it is easy to get lost in Bod's world.

The Graveyard Book is located in YA Fiction: YA Gaiman

Get ready for a pizza taste-off on January 19!

The next YA program will put your taste buds to the test as we run slice after slice of pizza by you to determine the best in Manitowoc! We will have pizzas from different pizza joints in the area and it will be up to you to determine who bakes the top pie. We will also vote to see who makes the best crust, sauce and cheese. See if you can pick out who makes each pizza.

Of course, when you eat that much pizza, you need to wash it down with something - but you have to figure out what cola goes best with a slice. There will be plenty of different cola options to choose from and we will also vote on those as well!

Food and drinks will be served beginning at 5 p.m. on January 19 in the Balkansky Room. Be sure to bring your appetites!

Coming Monday: Yu-Gi-Oh! card party

On Monday, January 12, we will be hosting a Yu-Gi-Oh! card party in the Balkansky Room at 4:30 p.m. Everyone in grades 3 and up are welcome to come in and play and trade their cards in this casual get-together. We will not be handing out starter decks, so players should bring their own cards. Their will be snacks, soda and some giveaways throughout, so don't miss it!

The card party will go until 6 p.m.
