Battle meeting reminder

One last reminder about our Battle of the Books team meeting on July 31 at 3:30 p.m. in the Quiet Study Room. We will go over the Battle format and take a first look at each of the books that are on the battle list. It should last about an hour.

We will have few more meetings between now and the September 3 battle at Silver Lake College. We will pick the next meeting date on Thursday.

Going out on a high note

The Summer Program closed to sound of karaoke yesterday, with a number of brave souls willing to sing in public after loading up on pizza and pop. Medals were handed out on two categories: technical and performance. Matt and Melissa tied for the gold in the technical as they both sang to perfect scores. Forrest netted the silver and Angie walked away with the bronze. As for the performance, the crowd selected Angie as the big winner, followed by the all-girl group, the Diamonds. Matt snagged a bronze for his efforts. Big applause goes to Forrest who was willing to break the ice by performing first and going big by belting out Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody".

As for the summer totals, Jeannette cleaned up with a whopping 313 totals hours (adding reading hours, program attendance hours and doubled Battle Book hours). She claimed the Now 27 CD as her top prize. Hunter earned second prize with 83 hours and chose the origami kit. Logan finished third to claim a LaDeDa Books gift certificate by reading 78.25 hours. Close on his heels at 77.25 hours was Sarah, the owner of the Now 28 CD.

That brings the summer programs to a close, but there is still plenty going on. The Battle of the Books is set for September 3 and we are still taking sign-ups. We are also reconvening our teen advisory board and the Wii tournament rolls on August 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Battle meeting next Thursday @ 3:30 p.m.

I haven't had time to get a call out to all the team members yet, but our first Battle of the Books meeting will be Thursday, July 31 at 3:30 in the Quiet Study room. We will use the time to get to know each other and get a feel of the Battle format.

Don't worry if you can't make it to this meeting, we will be getting together multiple times between now and September 3. There will be plenty of time to get together and plot out a Manitowoc victory at the Battle of the Books!

Teen Talkback returns...sort of

For those of you who don't know about Teen Talkback, it is a teen advisory board that gives input on the library's teen programs and collection. Anyone in Grades 6 through 12 are welcome to take part and express their opinions on the goings on with all things YA.

TT went on hiatus for the past two months while the summer programs were in full swing, but we are going to reconvene in August, but on a trial basis. We want to make sure we have good turnout for the meetings each month (which can be difficult once shcool is in full swing). Next month, anyone interested is welcome to take part in the meetings and see if TT is for them. If enough people are on board, we will continue it as a monthly organization.

Next month, we will discuss the summer program (what worked, didn't work, etc.) and the upcoming fall schedule. We are also, as always, looking for input on the collection, from books to DVDsto CDs.

I will post the first meeting date next week, as well as announce it at the Karaoke Finale on Monday.

Summer swan song - Karaoke style

After a lot of chocolate medals were handed out for the Wii Olympics and the Scavenger Hunt the past two weeks, the summer programming wraps up next Monday with the Karaoke-laden, pizza-loaded Finale. Starting at 2 p.m. next Monday, we will turn the microphone over to you as we distribute the final medals of the summer in a singing (and performing contest). At the same time, you can enjoy pizza and use your reading hours that you earned over the summer to bid on numerous prizes.

Don't forget that the Finale is the last chance for you to get your reading slips turned in! While the first warbled strains of karaoke are being belted out, we will tally up the last slips and get you poised to claim whatever prizes you have earned. The prizes include books, DVDs, CD, gift certificates to LaDeDa Books, Family Video and iTunes, jump drives, games, and more.

Wii Olympics on Monday

The medals are polished, the Wii is warmed up and the chocolate is, well, chocolaty. That means it is time for the Wii Olympics - our next YA summer program event. Things will get underway at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 14th in the Balkansky Room where we will have everyone go head-to-head in their favorite Olympic events and find out who the top cyber-Olympians are.

You will get to choose three events from the following list:

Running events - 100 M, 110M hurdles, 400M, 400m Hurdles, 4x100M relay

Field events - long jump, triple jump, hammer toss, javelin

Swimming events - 100M Freestyle, 4x100M Freestyle Relay

Other events - Rowing

This is how it will work: Each player will compete at least once in each of the events they sign up for. The top four competitors in each event will then go head-to-head in a medal competition. Due to time constraints, we won't be doing some of the other time-consuming events, like ping-pong, high jump, or trampoline. Nonetheless, there will be plenty of Olympic events for everyone - plus plenty of pop and snacks to keep you fueled up.

The Updated Wii leader board

Friday marked the third tournament date for our ongoing Wii tournament and the leader board was shaken up a bit by the end. We have new leaders in DDR, Guitar Hero, Tennis and Bowling. In addition, the Smash Brothers point totals have tightened up as well, though Bryce still holds a slim lead.

Just a reminder of the scoring: DDR and Guitar Hero are based on the top individual song scores by each player. Bowling is a combination of the top two games bowled by each player. Tennis and Smash Bros. are head-to-head tournaments where a victory in each round earns points (!st round=1 point, 2nd round=2 points, etc.).

Use the Force...and eat popcorn!

Don't forget to check out the Star Wars Movie Marathon on Monday, July 7. We will get things started with Episode I at 10 a.m. and run through to the end of Episode III sometime later in the afternoon. Along the way, we will do some Star Wars trivia and give away some prizes, like movie candy and some Star Wars goodies.

As always, attending the program counts towards your Summer Reading Program hours. As a bonus, anyone who has the fortitude to sit through all three movies will earn an extra 15 hours - that's 20 hours total just for watching Star Wars movies!

Pop and popcorn will be in abundance so be sure to test your endurance and make your way up to the Balkansky Room at 10 a.m. on Monday!

Red, Wet and Blue

Today is day for the Paint the Library event. As it stands now, we will make a final decision on whether we will be actually painting the windows sometime after 1 p.m. Regardless of the weather, we will have a YA program this afternoon at 2 p.m.

If the painting gets rained out, we are going to hold a "wrap" party in the Quiet Study Room. Not unlike the bubble Wrap Decathlon, we will be holding various contests using bubble wrap, toilet paper and cling wrap. As the name suggests, there will be some wrapping going on so feel free to come in and check it out.
